Certificate of visa exemption for overseas Vietnamese and family members

In order to encourage overseas Vietnamese to visit their motherland and relatives, Vietnam has enacted favorable immigration law for these subjects. Accordingly, overseas Vietnamese as well as their family members will benefit from Vietnam visa exemption policy going up to a maximum of five years.

1. Forms of certificate of Vietnam visa exemption

The certificate of Vietnam visa exemption for overseas Vietnamese and their family members can be taken in the forms of either stamped certificate or detached certificate:

✓ A stamped certificate: A visa exemption certificate is stamped on the passports of Vietnamese nationals living abroad and foreign nationals to allow their entrance into Vietnam.

✓ Detached certificate: A visa exemption certificate issued to Vietnamese people living abroad under permanent resident’s permit granted by foreign authorities and holder of passports of foreign countries or territories with which Vietnam does not have diplomatic relations.

2. Requirements for getting Vietnam visa exemption certificate:

To be eligible for a Vietnam visa exemption certificate, these following documents must be required:

✓ Foreign passport or equivalent documents with validity of at least 6 months upto the date of entry.

✓ 01 2x2 inch photo taken within recent 6 months with white background, straight face, bare head and no colored glasses

✓ 01 fully filled Vietnam visa application form for visa exemption certificate

✓ Legal documents to prove that the person in request has original Vietnamese citizenship or of Vietnamese origin

✓ Legal documents to prove that the person in request has conjugal or blood relation with overseas Vietnamese or Vietnamese citizen

✓ The person in request is not in the condition of whose entry or exit being banned or forced to postpone by Vietnam Immigration Law, articles 21 and 28.

To ask for the issuing of certificate of Vietnam visa exemption, the applicant must submit required documents to Vietnamese competent authority in his/her country of residence. In case the person in request is residing in Vietnam, submission is to Vietnam Immigration Department.

A certificate of Vietnam visa exemption is valid for a maximum of 5 years and must expire at least 6 months before the expiration date of his/her passport or of equivalent documents. This certificate is issued separately in person. In case the children’s names are included in their parents’ passports, their names can be added to their parents’ certificates of Vietnam visa exemption.
