Vietnam entry requirements for foreigners

Travelling overseas has long been a trend for worldwide citizens. However, there are always some certain requirements that a foreigner has to satisfy to be allowed to enter a country no matter which country it is. Requirements for entering Vietnam

1. Passport

A passport is issued by a nation to its citizens for the purpose of international travel. This document is to identify its holder in terms of nationality and personal information. If you would like to come to Vietnam, your passport must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upto the date of entry into Vietnam and must be stamped with a visa by Vietnam Immigration Department. This is to certify that the foreigner has legal right to enter, stay or leave Vietnam after a certain duration of time.

2. Visa

Together with passport, visa is an indispensable document when entering a country. Vietnam visa is issued by a Vietnamese government to its foreigners to allow them to get into the country and take some specific activities within the national border. Normally, a visa is a stamp endorsed into the foreigner’s original passport by Vietnam Immigration Department on or before the actual date of arrival. A foreigner can ask for a visa at Vietnam Embassy in his/her country or apply online for a visa approval letter to be granted to get stamped visa at Vietnam international airport of arrival. A visa includes details about the purpose of entry, allowed number of entries and length of stay. While being checked in the Immigration counter at Vietnam border gates, a foreigner will need to present his/her passport with stamped visa on it or fill in a visa application form to get visa stamped so that he/she is allowed to pass by.

3. Other documents

For some people that are granted to enter Vietnam without a visa, some other documents may need to be presented for the check-in.

- For nationals of countries that are in the list of Vietnam visa exemption, there will be a limit on the allowed duration of their stay in Vietnam which means that they need a proof that they will exit Vietnam in or before the required date. In this case, a return ticket for a flight can be asked to present.

- For overseas Vietnamese and their family members, a certificate of Vietnam visa exemption will need presenting to replace the need for a visa. A person in request can apply for this certificate from a Vietnam competent authority in his/her country of residence.

- In some special cases of suspicion, the Immigration Officers can also require you to show vaccination certificate or HIV examination certificate.
